I have always been a lover of animals. Growing up on a farm, I just had a natural attachment to all the animals - and that extended to the animals in the forest surrounding our home as well. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, it is almost a given that once you become old enough to use a firearm that you go deer hunting. I got as far as learning how to shoot a shotgun, and that was it. There is no way that I could have gone into the forest and shot a defenseless deer just for the sport of it, not even to put meat on the table. I was that strange child that you see talking to the birds and the rabbits, the one that holds complete conversations with their pet raccoon, the chinchillas that their parents raised in the basement. The only animal that I've never been too wild about was my brother's ferret, and only because the little sucker bit me because he wanted to be left alone.
Call me naive, but I've never met an animal (except for the ferret) that I didn't like. I think nothing of walking up to a dog that is walking with its owner in our apartment complex to pet him/her and talk to them. I think nothing of petting the stray cats that I see wandering through our apartment complex at times. Most of the time those poor cats are starved for affection and will purr up a storm at the slightest bit of interaction with me or the boys.
So for those that know me, it comes as no surprise when they get something on their Facebook wall or in their inbox from me asking them to help me fight against the injustice and cruelty of animals around the world - regardless of size, place, or cuteness factor. God made us stewards over the animals, and as such, we need to treat each animal with kindness and respect.
Unfortunately, that's not the case for everybody. The media reports that you see on a regular basis are just the tip of the iceberg. There is no national reporting system for animal abuse, and most cases are never reported, and most animal suffering goes unrecognized or ignored. Until just a few short years ago, animal cruelty - when reported and the abuser taken into custody - resulted in little more than a slap on the wrist and a fine, possibly probation depending on the severity of the case.

About Susie's Hope

Susie's Hope is based on the true story that successfully passed Susie's Law in North Carolina, which seeks stricter punishment for animal abusers. Susie's Hope brings to life the inspirational relationship between pit bull attack survivor Donna Lawrence and Susie, a pit bull mix puppy found beaten, burned, and left for dead. Recognizing that neglect and abuse were to blame for the tragic attack that nearly claimed her life 10 months earlier, Donna rescues the battered animal and accepts her as family. Together, they learn to heal, love and forgive as they lead a historic effort to seek justice and protection, not only for Susie, but for all animals. Susie's Hope stars Emmanuelle Vaguer (40 Days and 40 Nights), Burgess Jenkins (Remember the Titans) and Andrea Powell (Ender's Game, The Twilight: Breaking Dawn Saga: Part 2). Susie's Hope is an incredible story of love, loss, and redemption.
To say this has been a hard post for me to write goes without saying. I cried through the entire movie, and I cried when reading the information that I received about the Susie's Hope foundation in North Carolina and saw the images of her battered and broken little body. Please take a moment and view the trailer for the movie.
Susie has won the 2014 American Hero Dog from the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. You can watch her video here.

Donna saw the light in Susie's eyes, even after the hell that she had been through, when it would have been so easy for her to just close her eyes and pass away. Susie has a strong and gentle spirit, and watching this movie, and reading the stories about her, only solidifies that light and love shining through those beautiful brown eyes. I love animals that overcome the odds, they are special indeed.
